Iowa County Plans GPS Monitoring Pilot Program

Some Pre-trial Offenders Will Be Released Beginning April 1

According to CBS 2 Iowa, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is implementing a GPS monitoring pilot program that will allow some pre-trial offenders to be released as early as April 1, 2022.

The electronic monitoring program will be available for certain inmates who are incarcerated while awaiting trial. These offenders, if approved, will be equipped with an electronic monitoring device that allows law enforcement to keep track of their whereabouts.

The report indicates that the program will cost around $140,000 to start. It will initially focus on domestic violence offenders. In total over $1 million has been approved by the county with funds from the American Rescue Plan aiding its kick-off.

Benefits of GPS Monitoring

GPS monitoring has become a useful tool for law enforcement agencies looking to ease jail overcrowding while still holding offenders accountable.

GPS ankle bracelets can offer detailed location monitoring and information for offenders at all risk levels. The devices are worn 24/7, are tamper-resistant, and are equipped with anti-jamming technology.

Victims are given assurance that offenders remain in a specified place or are staying away from exclusion zones. GPS location monitoring is effective for use in criminal law and family law matters. It can be used in coordination with continuous alcohol monitoring. Furthermore, GPS monitoring may assist in restraining order cases.

Offenders are able to remain out of custody while they await their trial as long as they stay in compliance with all court orders.
