The Link Between Traumatic Stress and Substance Abuse
According to the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS), the link between substance use and stress is twofold. People who have experienced trauma often turn to alcohol or drugs to help them cope, while people with substance use disorders are “more likely to experience traumatic events.” It is also common for people to experience trauma-related disorders and substance use disorders at the same time.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most common co-occurring disorders with substance use disorders. The ISTSS notes that:
- “Problematic alcohol use” is reported by one- to three-quarters of people who have been abused or experienced a violent, traumatic event.
- Problematic alcohol use is also reported by one-tenth to one-third of individuals who have experienced certain traumatic events (accident, illness, or disaster-related).
- Individuals who have been sexually abused have higher rates of substance use disorders.
- There is an increased risk for alcohol use disorder in women who have survived a traumatic life event.
What to Do If You or Your Loved One Needs Help
If you or your loved one is struggling with mental health or substance use disorder, or both, you need to seek professional help. Treatment is available and can be customized to fit your needs. It is important to have an open and honest conversation with your loved ones about what is going on in your life, particularly if you have experienced trauma, addiction, or a mental health crisis.
