SCRAM Continuous Alcohol Monitoring Devices Targets Repeat DUI Offenders

Driving Under the Influence is a problem that affects every jurisdiction across the nation.  Courts are bombarded with DUI offenders.  Worse yet, courts are inundated with repeat offenders.  Habitual drunk driving offenders that have two or more alcohol related incidents.  These repeat DUI offenders get behind the wheel and put the safety of everyone on the road in jeopardy.  Courts throughout the country have joined efforts to end repeat drunk driving offenses.  These efforts include collaborative courts such as DUI and drug courts, as well as the implantation of sobriety programs to address the underlying issue of addiction.

As part of these collaborative efforts, many courts have begun offering the option for offenders to wear SCRAM Continuous Alcohol Monitoring devices in lieu of jail time.  SCRAM devices monitor alcohol consumption 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  They require complete sobriety during the monitoring period.  Allowing a defendant to remain a productive member of society, going to work and taking care of their family, while staying sober has helped to reduce DUI recidivism in a number of counties.  South Dakota’s 24/7 Sobriety Program is one of the most successful in the nation.  Other jurisdictions have taken note including Jefferson County’s introduction of CAMP or Continuous Alcohol Monitoring Program with the hopes of reducing repeat alcohol offenses.
