Safe Rides available for Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day Weekend is notoriously one of the deadliest times of year for fatal drunk driving crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has compiled a list of companies and organizations that offer free or low cost safe rides on holidays. These programs allow people to enjoy the weekend without the worry of a DUI arrest or worse yet a drunk driving related accident. These “sober rides” will either offer free towing services such as AAA’s Tipsy Tow or will send someone to drive you home in your own car.

Law enforcement will have increased saturation patrols and officers on the roads to deter drunk driving. It just isn’t worth it. A drunk driving arrest can be very expensive. Many estimate that a first time offense can cost as much as $10,000. You could also be facing jail time and a significant license suspension. If you are convicted of driving under the influence you may be required to install an ignition interlock device on your vehicle.

Some jurisdictions have implanted sobriety programs that work in collaboration with the local courts to reduce drunk driving recidivism. These programs often implement the use of alcohol monitoring through devices such as the SCRAM Continuous Alcohol Monitoring device. The SCRAM bracelet has helped over 1200 jurisdictions combat drunk driving holding participants accountable.
