Labor Day Safety

Safety Tips for Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day can be one of the deadliest times on the roads.  Traditionally, the long holiday weekend is filled with fun water activities, drinking and road trips.  Unfortunately, too many people choose to drink while participating in these festivities.  Labor Day safety begins with making good choices.  Whether you are spending the day by the pool, at the beach or on a boat there are a few tips to keep you and your loved ones safe.

  1. Never Drink and Drive. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), during the 2017 Labor Day holiday weekend 36% of fatal traffic collisions involved drunk drivers.  In an effort to combat drunk driving, law enforcement agencies from across the country have teamed up for campaigns like “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”  During the last few weeks of summer, there is a noticeable increase in the number of DUI enforcement officers, drunk driving checkpoints and other efforts to stop impaired driving.
  2. Plan a sober ride. Today there are a number of options available to get from one place to another if you plan on drinking during the Labor Day weekend.  Driving impaired, whether it is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, can have deadly consequences.  Plan ahead and choose a sober driver, use public transportation or download a ride-sharing app.
  3. Stay safe on the water. Boating is one of the go-to activities throughout the Labor Day weekend.  Never consume alcohol or do drugs and drive a boat.  Be sure that all passengers are wearing a life jacket and always swim with a buddy.
  4. Drink plenty of water. One mistake that many people make is that they forget to drink water throughout the day.  Being in the sun can dehydrate you quickly, add alcohol into the mix and you could the results could be devastating.  Make sure that you have plenty of water on hand wherever you choose to celebrate.
  5. Be careful around the pool. Accidental drownings are a tragic reality around the Labor Day holiday.  Never allow children around a pool without supervision.  Designate a sober adult to have eyes on the pool at all times.  Never swim while intoxicated.

Do not become a statistic over the Labor Day holiday weekend.  Make good choices that keep you and everyone else safe on the roads and on the water.
