Fall means football, back-to-school, cooler temps and little kids dressed in all too adorable costumes. As the month of October looms close, it is important to remember that Halloween can be a deadly time of year. As trick-or-treaters comb the streets of neighborhoods across the country, so does the chance for a devastating accident. The combination of more pedestrians on the streets and adults partaking in Halloween partying, makes deadly consequences.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released findings that from 2011 to 2015 45% of all traffic fatalities on Halloween resulted from a drunk-driving related crash. According to Safe Kids Worldwide children are more than 2x as likely to be killed by a car while walking on Halloween night. Given these statistics, it simply is not worth drinking and driving on Halloween. The risk is too high. Remember, if you are hosting a Halloween party offer non-alcoholic drinks, remind attendees to use ride sharing apps such as Uber and Lyft or to take a cab home. If you are planning to attend a Halloween event utilize a designated driver. We can all take steps to ensure the safety of little ones and adults on this time-honored tradition. Keep the roads safe by staying sober if you plan to drive.
