The Most Dangerous Cities in America

Last year, CBS News produced a detailed article ranking the most dangerous cities in America. According to their findings, there were approximately 367 violent crimes per 100,000 people in the United States.

What is considered a violent crime according to the FBI:

  • Murder
  • Non-negligent manslaughter
  • Rape
  • Robbery
  • Aggravated assault

The news organization ranked the top 50 cities with the highest rates of violent crime in 2019. Their analysis shows that Rochester, New York ranked 50th with 748 violent crimes per 100,000 people. West Palm Beach, Florida; Columbia, South Carolina; Springfield, Illinois; and Shreveport, Louisiana rounded out the next four cities.

In the middle of the pack were cities like Beaumont, Texas with a violent crime rate of 1,047 per 100,000 residents and 19 murders in 2019. Peoria, Illinois ranked 22nd with a crime rate of 1,044 crimes per 100,000 residents, and Odessa, Texas was 23rd with 1,038 violent crimes per 100,000 people in the city.

Cities with the Highest Violent Crime Rate

Detroit, Michigan was ranked as the city with the highest violent crime rate in the nation. According to CBS News, the city had a violent crime rate of 1,965 per 100,000 residents. In 2019 alone there were 275 people murdered.

St. Louis, Missouri was the city with the 2nd highest violent crime rate. Their data showed that the city had 1,927 violent crimes per 100,000 people and that 194 people were murdered in 2019.

Memphis, Tennessee rounded out the top three with a violent crime rate of 1,901 per 100,000 residents. 190 people were murdered in Memphis in 2019.
