British Prime Minister David Cameron to Expand Use of Alcohol Monitoring Bracelets

glass-of-beerIn November of 2014, British Prime Minister David Cameron promised to expand the use of alcohol monitoring bracelets throughout the U.K. With his party’s reelection in 2015, Cameron assured that up to 5,000 people a year could be required to wear alcohol monitoring bracelets such as a SCRAM device. The Prime Minister hopes that this will help cure the alcohol problem that runs rampant throughout the U.K. It is believed that the country spends billions of dollars on alcohol-related crimes each year.

In a daring move, the City of London introduced legislation under the Alcohol Abstinence Monitoring Requirement (AAMR). This sentencing initiative requires that those convicted of certain alcohol crimes remain sober for at least one year. Sobriety is monitored through devices such as the SCRAM bracelet. The alcohol monitoring requirement is aimed at the underlying cause of addiction as opposed to the actual crime.

The United Kingdom and other countries have seen a huge impact on the number of alcohol-related crimes with the requirement of alcohol monitoring. SCRAM bracelets have proven effective and are a known deterrent against drunk driving and other alcohol-related crimes.
